The moves to look for
Does this move flip a hidden card, or help flip one eventually?
If yes, play it. Four situations to watch for:
1. Move the top card of the waste pile down or up
Play it when it leads to flipping a hidden card, whether by moving it to the tableau or up to a foundation.
What I do: I only move it down if it puts me one card away from flipping a hidden card. If two or more are missing, I don't move it down.
The waste pile shows the 8♥. On the tableau, you have a free 9♠ and a 6♦ sitting on a hidden card.
The move: you move the 8♥ onto the 9♠. Only a black 7 is missing: as soon as it shows up, it lands on the 8♥, the 6♦ goes on top, and the hidden card flips.
When I'm stuck, I choose to move down a high card that doesn't keep low cards from going up to a foundation.
2. Empty a column completely
Only an empty column can receive a king.
A column has only the 9♦ left, with nothing hidden underneath. Another column has a K♣ sitting on a hidden card.
The move: you put the 9♦ on a 10♠. The column is empty. You move the K♣ there, and the hidden card underneath flips.
3. Move a card up to free the one below it
The 4♠ is on top of a column, and it can go up to a foundation. Right below it is the 5♥. Elsewhere, a 4♣ sits on a hidden card.
The move: you send the 4♠ up. The 5♥ becomes the top of its column. You put the 4♣ on it, and the hidden card flips.
4. Bring a card back down from a foundation
The 5♠ is on top of a column. On the hearts foundation, you've gone up to the 4♥. Elsewhere, a 3♠ sits on a hidden card, with nothing able to receive it.
The move: you bring the 4♥ back down from the foundation onto the 5♠, move the 3♠ onto it, and the hidden card flips.
You can bring several cards back down in a row to eventually flip a hidden card.
When the game steps in
- A card jumps and your move is refused: you tried to draw, or to move the top card of the waste pile down to the tableau, while a required move was waiting. The jumping card shows you which one. It counts as a missed move.
- A card jumps and the draw happens anyway: the top card of the waste pile was playable on the tableau and you just buried it. It's a warning, not a missed move. You can hit Undo to go back and play it.
Missed moves
The goal of the game is to win with zero missed moves.
End of game
When there's nothing left to play, the game tells you whether your starting deal was probably winnable or not, by simulating 2000 games.
Solitaire rules reminder
- The foundations, top right, fill up by suit, from ace to king.
- The columns build downward, alternating red and black (a 7♥ goes on an 8♠).
- A run of visible cards moves as a block.
- The stock turns over three at a time, and only the top card is playable.
